Digger movie news below!
Tom Cruise’s new movie Digger may be heading to cinemas this week, but the journey behind the film began almost a decade ago – and took director Alejandro G. Iñárritu from the Arctic to Antarctica.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker has revealed that he travelled to both the Arctic and Antarctica while researching Digger, long before cameras started rolling.
Speaking to GQ Mexico, Iñárritu said Digger was the result of nine years of development, which included trips to the Arctic and Antarctica, almost a year of pre-production, and a story rewritten five times.
The movie stars Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a billionaire oil tycoon whose actions trigger an environmental catastrophe. Greenland also plays an important role in the story, with Rockwell’s drilling operations linked to a shifting glacier.
Iñárritu recently explained that some of the inspiration actually dates back to making The Revenant, when changing conditions forced the production to travel further south in search of snow.
According to Infobae, the filmmaker and his team later researched melting ice, methane and the potential for new shipping routes and oil exploration in the Arctic as temperatures rise.
Perhaps most surprisingly, Iñárritu said that some of the scenarios they had researched years ago began to feel less and less like fiction as Digger made its long journey to the screen.

While the director’s research took him to some of the most remote places on Earth, the movie itself was largely filmed much closer to home in the UK, including at Pinewood Studios.
So, when can you watch Digger movie?
The movie arrives in UK and U.S. cinemas on October 2, with Cruise joined by Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons.
Reviews landed on Rotten Tomatoes on September 29, and so far, Digger is proving seriously divisive. Critics have praised everything from Cruise’s committed performance to the film’s ambition, while others have been far less convinced by its climate satire.
