The Social Reckoning: Where Was the Facebook Drama Filmed?

The Social Reckoning details below!

Sixteen years after The Social Network chronicled the beginnings of Facebook, Aaron Sorkin is returning to the tech giant with The Social Reckoning – this time turning his attention to the controversies surrounding the platform more than a decade later.

Written and directed by Sorkin, the dramatic thriller is described as a companion piece rather than a direct sequel to The Social Network and is inspired by the events behind The Wall Street Journal’s 2021 investigation The Facebook Files.

Mikey Madison stars as Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, while The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz and Jeremy Strong takes over the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg.

While the story is rooted in Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C., much of The Social Reckoning was actually filmed hundreds of miles north in Vancouver, Canada – with the city even standing in for the U.S. Capitol during a recreation of the January 6, 2021 attack.

What is the plot of The Social Reckoning?

Inspired by true events, The Social Reckoning follows Facebook engineer Frances Haugen as she enlists Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz to expose some of the social network’s most closely guarded secrets.

The story is inspired by the events that led to The Facebook Files, the newspaper’s 2021 investigative series based on internal Facebook documents.

Rather than revisiting Facebook’s creation, as The Social Network did, Sorkin’s new film examines what the company had become in the years that followed.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Sorkin summed up the distinction: “The Social Network was about how Facebook was invented, and The Social Reckoning is what it’s become.”

Who stars in The Social Reckoning?

Mikey Madison plays whistleblower Frances Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White stars as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz.

Jeremy Strong portrays Mark Zuckerberg, taking over the role played by Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network. The cast also includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr.

Is there a trailer for The Social Reckoning?

Yes! Check out the official trailer for The Social Reckoning below.

The trailer offers a first look at Madison as Haugen, White as Horwitz, and Strong’s portrayal of an older Zuckerberg as the film moves from Facebook’s inner workings to the investigation threatening to expose them.

Where was The Social Reckoning filmed?

The Social Reckoning was filmed primarily in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, with production taking place between October and December 2025.

One of the film’s most striking transformations was the use of the Vancouver Art Gallery to recreate the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., for scenes depicting the January 6, 2021 attack.

Production took over the area surrounding the gallery in downtown Vancouver in October 2025, with American flags, security barricades and scores of background actors transforming the Canadian location into Washington.

Other Vancouver locations can also be spotted throughout the production. Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison were photographed filming together around Sunset Beach, while local production reporting documented filming across the city during the shoot.

IMDb also lists San Francisco, California, as one of the film’s filming locations. However, with far more detailed production reporting available for the Vancouver shoot, British Columbia appears to have served as the production’s principal filming base.

What has the cast & crew said about The Social Reckoning?

Aaron Sorkin has been clear that he doesn’t consider The Social Reckoning a conventional sequel to The Social Network. Instead, the writer-director became interested in returning to Facebook after learning about Frances Haugen and the internal documents she disclosed.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Sorkin described Haugen’s story as a David-and-Goliath tale, saying: “Goliath has invited us to a party and then spiked the punch.”

Mikey Madison was similarly struck by the real woman she portrays. “Above all, I saw her as a truly brave hero,” Madison told the publication, adding that Haugen “risked everything for the greater good of people she didn’t even know but still deeply cared about.”

Meanwhile, Jeremy Strong approached his portrayal of Zuckerberg with the level of immersion he has become known for.

Sorkin revealed ahead of the film’s release that Strong remained in character on set, changing the way he spoke and walked and largely keeping his distance from his co-stars between takes.

When and where will The Social Reckoning be released?

The Social Reckoning will be released exclusively in cinemas on October 9, 2026.
