Prime Video’s Elle Filming Locations: Where Was the Legally Blonde Prequel Filmed?

Prime Video’s Elle is taking fans back to the 1990s, a brand-new prequel series exploring the teenage years of Elle Woods, long before Harvard Law School and the events of Legally Blonde. Starring newcomer Lexi Minetree and executive-produced by a bigwig roster of talent, including the film brand’s very own Reese Witherspoon via Hello Sunshine, the series follows a younger Elle as her seemingly perfect-perfect-pink California life is upended by an unexpected move to grungey Seattle.

With Prime Video’s Elle arriving on July 1, here is everything you need to know before watching — from the cast, plot, filming locations, and how the series connects to the beloved Legally Blonde films.

When Is Elle Released?

Prime Video’s Elle premieres exclusively on Prime Video on July 1, 2026, dropping all 8 episodes in one go! The series has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its debut, and is currently filming in Vancouver.

What Is Prime Video’s Elle About?

Elle serves as the origin story of Elle Woods before she became the unapologetically confident Harvard law student audiences met in Legally Blonde. After growing up in sunny Bel-Air, California, Elle’s world is upended when her family relocates to Seattle in 1995, forcing her to leave behind her friends, familiar lifestyle, and West Coast sunshine. As she navigates a new high school, grunge culture, first love, and unexpected friendships, Elle begins to develop the optimism, resilience, and determination we all know and love her for.

Who Is The Team Behind Elle?

Prime Video’s Elle was created by Laura Kittrell, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer. Caroline Dries also executive produces alongside Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, with Amanda Brown and Marc Platt rounding out the producing team.

Reese explained during a 2025 interview that she got the idea for the spin-off series after watching Jenna Ortega’s Netflix series, Wednesday.

Neustadter gushed about their leading lady, Lexi — telling Vancouver Sun, “This is somebody who goes above and beyond, who is so passionate, and who has that X factor. We realized she was already living and breathing Elle Woods, so we brought her in, put her through the wringer with the audition process. She crushed it.”

Is Elle Connected To Legally Blonde?

Yes. Prime Video’s Elle is an official prequel to Legally Blonde, following Elle Woods during her teenage years before she attended Harvard Law School. Reese Witherspoon, who famously played Elle in the original films, serves as an executive producer through Hello Sunshine and helped oversee the search for the series’ new leading star, Lexi Minetree. They’ve done several interviews and red carpet appearances together, and not only are these two obvious TWINS, but their bond is undeniable!

Why Does Elle Move To Seattle?

Rather than beginning with the glamorous college years fans already know, Elle explores one of the biggest turning points in her childhood. Following her parents’ decision to relocate from Bel-Air to Seattle, Elle must adapt to a completely different environment, culture, and social scene. The move becomes the catalyst for the experiences that ultimately shape the ambitious, compassionate, and determined woman audiences meet in Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde.

Where Was Elle Filmed?

Although the story follows Elle’s move from Bel-Air to Seattle, Prime Video’s Elle was filmed primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia, which doubles for 1990s Seattle throughout the show.

Location managers Jason Kaplon and Janet McCairns oversaw production across Vancouver, British Columbia, carefully using the city’s Pacific Northwest scenery to recreate 1990s Seattle. From its tree-lined neighborhoods to its overcast skyline, Vancouver provided both the look of the Emerald City and the blossoming production infrastructure needed for a major Prime Video series.
