Billie Eilish is officially heading to the big screen in The Bell Jar, a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s celebrated 1963 novel.
The upcoming The Bell Jar movie will mark the singer’s feature-film acting debut, with Eilish taking on the lead role of Esther Greenwood. And she won’t be alone, with an impressive cast now confirmed alongside her.
Written and directed by Oscar winner Sarah Polley, The Bell Jar takes audiences back to 1950s New York and Massachusetts – although filming actually took place north of the border in Canada. Production has now wrapped, but audiences could have quite a wait before seeing the finished movie, with no release date announced yet.
What is The Bell Jar about?
The Bell Jar is based on Sylvia Plath’s only novel, first published in 1963 and widely regarded as semi-autobiographical. The story follows Esther Greenwood, a talented young woman from the Boston suburbs who heads to New York City after landing a coveted internship at a women’s magazine.
But Esther struggles with the glamorous world she thought she wanted and the expectations placed on young women at the time. After returning home, her mental health deteriorates as she tries to determine what she wants from her future.
Eilish will play Esther in the new adaptation, marking her first leading role in a feature film after previously appearing in the Prime Video series Swarm.
Who is in The Bell Jar cast?
Eilish leads The Bell Jar as Esther Greenwood, while Carey Mulligan plays Esther’s mother.
The supporting cast has now been confirmed to include Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie, Danielle Deadwyler, Lili Taylor, Ella Beatty, Maggie Kuntz, Ike Barinholtz and Dylan Hawco.
Behind the camera is Sarah Polley, who is both writing and directing the adaptation. The Canadian filmmaker previously won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Women Talking.
Where was The Bell Jar filmed?
While Esther’s story takes her from Massachusetts to 1950s New York City, The Bell Jar was filmed in Ontario, Canada, with Toronto doing much of the heavy lifting.
Parts of downtown Toronto were transformed into mid-century New York during filming, with Adelaide, Bay and Queen streets receiving a period makeover complete with vintage cars. Eilish was also photographed on set in costume as Esther, giving fans their first glimpse at her transformation for the role.
Production also ventured outside downtown Toronto. Parkwood National Historic Site in Oshawa revealed earlier this summer that scenes involving Eilish and Storrie had been filmed at the historic property.
Filming began in June and wrapped in August 2026, making Ontario the unlikely stand-in for Esther Greenwood’s 1950s America.
When is The Bell Jar released?
For now, fans will have to be patient. A release date for The Bell Jar movie has not been announced.
